This coming Saturday, April 11, 2009, the Atlanta Helicopter Pilots Association (AHPA) offers lunch, camaraderie and lots of information about local heliports, and an opportunity to discuss safety with a representative from the Atlanta tower Air Traffic Control. The meeting will take place at the Tara Place Condominium Clubhouse at the Atlanta Motor Speedway from 12:00 to 3:00.

The National Air Transportation Association (NATA) has submitted its comments on the Transportation Security Administration's (TSA) Large Aircraft Security Program (LASP) proposed rule.

A group of helicopter pilots with an unusual name is searching for new members and if you soloed at least 20 years ago, you can be a member. Twirly Birds has been around since 1945 and it was at this time, during a fledgling helicopter industry, that a small band of helicopter pilots decided to form a group in which to share common goals, experiences, hardships, and yes: dangers.

In the late 1990s, Boston lost its last two remaining public-use heliports.  Since the closing of the Nashua Street Heliport, the New England Helicopter Council (NEHC) and the Massachusetts Aeronautics Commission (MAC) have been actively working to re-establish a public use Heliport. Under new leadership, the NEHC, a long-time HAI Affiliate, renewed its membership and enlisted participation from many local operators and manufacturers.

The National EMS Pilots Association released the results of a survey regarding NVG utilization it conducted earlier this spring to the FAA on the 26th of June 2008. The survey contained responses from nearly 400 pilots who are involved in or interested in the air medical industry.

Williams, an Army Apache Helicopter Pilot, was shot down over Baghdad during the initial U.S. invasion of Iraq.  He survived the crash landing, escaped into the darkness, and evaded capture for 45 grueling minutes before being taken hostage by an angry mob of mercenaries.  He was then delivered into the hands of the Iraqi Revolutionary Guard who shuffled him from prison to prison, until he was rescued by the U.S. Marines, on April 13 2003.
