HAI is saddened at the passing of Mr. Richard Ralph (Rick) Snure, who died on June 11, 2009 when he hit a power line northwest of Phoenix, Arizona, while gathering cattle. Mr. Snure was born on February 26, 1948, in Douglas, Arizona, and was raised on a ranch between Rodeo, New Mexico and Douglas.

NTSB Posts the Executive Summary of the Public Hearing on Helicopter Emergency Medical Services

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has published a 35 page report on the four-day public hearing on the Safety of Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) operations that began on Tuesday, February 3, 2009, at 9:00 a.m., and ran through Friday, February 6. HAI President, Matt Zuccaro, who is also Co-Chair of the International Helicopter Safety Team (IHST), was one of three keynote witnesses who opened the hearing with individual presentations.

The Helicopter Association International will be exhibiting at the 48th International Paris Airshow (Hall 4, booth A-104), which runs from Monday, June 15 to Sunday, June 21 at the Paris - Le Bourget Airport Exhibition Centre.  HAI President, Matt Zuccaro, Director of Membership, Annette Duplinsky, and Manager of Advertising & Exhibit Sales, Lisa Henderson will be on hand to meet with visitors and discuss topical issues facing the global helicopter market, while also addressing inquiries about membership and HELI-EXPO.

John R. Kemp

Era Director of Safety, John Kemp, 58, died Friday, March 20, 2009 in a local hospital. He was described as a natural leader with an inexhaustible supply of energy and dedication. Kemp grew up in Beaumont Texas and entered the Marine Corp at age 17, where he served his county in Viet Nam. He continued his lengthy Military career with the Army and National Guard, whereby he earned the unerring respect and admiration of commanding officers and fellow pilots.

Harry Edward. "Ned" Gilliand, Jr. (1931 - 2009)

Ned Gilliand passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, March 19, 2009. He accrued over 15,000 hours of rotary-wing time, plus over 2,500 hours of fixed-wing time. He collected aviation memorabilia, as a way of preserving helicopter history. His generosity extended to universities and aviation museums, to which he contributed much of his collection. His donations to Helicopter Foundation International (HFI) include part of the world's largest collection of unassembled kits of rotary-wing models.

Jim Cheatham: January 5, 1942 – March 11, 2009

A pioneer in the airshow business, Jim Cheatham was president of Salinas-based Verticare Helicopters & Airplanes and head of Showcopters, the world's only civilian helicopter air show team. Cheatham died of a sudden illness early Wednesday March 11 at his home. He was 67 years old. Cheatham had suffered a mild heart attack a week earlier.
