The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has published a 35 page report on the four-day public hearing on the Safety of Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) operations that began on Tuesday, February 3, 2009, at 9:00 a.m., and ran through Friday, February 6. HAI President, Matt Zuccaro, who is also Co-Chair of the International Helicopter Safety Team (IHST), was one of three keynote witnesses who opened the hearing with individual presentations.

The 2008 General Aviation and Part 135 Activity Survey (GA Survey) is now underway. The FAA’s annual GA Survey is the only source for information on the general aviation fleet, the number of hours flown, and the reasons people use general aviation aircraft. Data collected by this survey help determine funding for infrastructure and service needs and form the basis for critical research and analysis of general aviation issues.

While in Concord, California for HAI’s spring Executive Committee Meeting, members of the HAI Executive Committee visited with several local members.
One such visit was to the Bristow Flight Academy, which also houses the Contra Costa County Sherriff Aerial support Unit.

Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast (ADS-B) is a satellite and radio-based air traffic control, navigation, communication, and weather reporting technology that forms the backbone of the FAA’s NextGen Air Transportation System.  This video highlights the need for and benefits of ADS-B in the Gulf of Mexico, where thousands of helicopter flights are made each day without any federal radar coverage or weather reporting.  The FAA and HAI members have been working for more than a year to install ADS-B ground stations on oil rigs in the Gulf.  Learn more about their efforts and the technology that will soon replace radar nation-wide as the primary tool for air traffic control.

HAI's Safety Committee is looking for one or two persons with a strong commitment to helicopter safety to fill vacant positions on the Safety Committee. Persons with maintenance experience are particularly encouraged to apply, as that discipline is currently underrepresented on the Committee. The committee is therefore, in accordance with its "Terms of Reference," seeking resumes from individuals with strong helicopter aviation safety management experience who are interested in serving on the Safety Committee.

Era Director of Safety, John Kemp, 58, died Friday, March 20, 2009 in a local hospital. He was described as a natural leader with an inexhaustible supply of energy and dedication. Kemp grew up in Beaumont Texas and entered the Marine Corp at age 17, where he served his county in Viet Nam. He continued his lengthy Military career with the Army and National Guard, whereby he earned the unerring respect and admiration of commanding officers and fellow pilots.

A pioneer in the airshow business, Jim Cheatham was president of Salinas-based Verticare Helicopters & Airplanes and head of Showcopters, the world's only civilian helicopter air show team. Cheatham died of a sudden illness early Wednesday March 11 at his home. He was 67 years old. Cheatham had suffered a mild heart attack a week earlier.

Helicopter Foundation International to exhibit at Chandler-Gilbert Community College's 13th Annual Greater Southwest Aviation Maintenance Technician Symposium – Chandler, Arizona. Thursday & Friday, March 12 and 13 - 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

HAI President, Matt Zuccaro to address 1,000 aviation experts, technicians, and community members at the Awards Luncheon at the Chandler-Gilbert Community College Annual Aviation Maintenance Technician Symposium on Thursday, March 12, in Mesa, Arizona. Zuccaro will also conduct two classroom sessions on Friday, March 13.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has proposed commercial air carrier security measures for General Aviation (GA) aircraft weighing more than 12,500 lbs., regardless of operation and TSA proposes to include a prohibited items list, i.e. tools and liquids. The comment period ends today, Friday, February 27.
